Hong Kong Arts Centre

1977, Institutional

2 Harbour Road

Tao Ho

Hong Kong Arts Centre is housed by an architecture which is itself an art piece. It was designed by architect and artist Mr. Ho Tao. Since its opening in 1977, Hong Kong Art Centre still posses the power to attract talents and nurture art creation.

Built on a small piece of land, Hong Kong Arts Centre is a compact building that allows multiple and complex functions. The architect delicately utilised triangles as the theme and adopted the pattern throughout the design layout, building structure and forms.

The ceiling is composed of structural triangles to reduce the number of pillars within the architecture. The central staircase connects different functional spaces within the building. In the past, air-conditioning pipes were hung in the central area like an art piece. The architect strongly conveyed the concept “forms follow function” of modern architectural style in his design. The beauty of Hong Kong Arts Centre does not come from excessive decorations but its simplicity and brilliance in functions and mechanism. Hong Kong Arts Centre is still one of the best architectural masterpieces in Hong Kong nowadays.
