The construction of Kai Tak Airport commenced in the 1920s, a major development was completed in the 1960s with an expanded terminal before it ceased service in 1998. The 1960s design was a collaboration between British architects and local architect Eric Cumine. Although the airport was not massive in scale, it was well equipped with advanced navigation system matching international standards. One could enjoy the view of airport apron and taxiway on the viewing deck. After 20 years of operation and architectural alterations, Kai Tak had become symbol of the era, marking the rising of Hong Kong as the most sought-after city in Asia. Despite its limited space, Kai Tak Airport was always a pleasant and convenient airport that welcomed visitors from different countries, as well as an emotional place where families greet and send off friends and relatives. With countless laughter and tears, Kai Tak Airport is the people’s airport and part of our collective memory.
