Man Yee Building

1957, Commercial

68 Des Voeux Road Central

Chu Pin

Man Yee Building is a significant showpiece of Chu Pin of Kwan, Chu and Yang Architects. It introduced a revolutionary design to office buildings in Hong Kong in the 1950s, adopting the concept of multi-level indoor shopping gallery, and equipped with Hong Kong’s first public escalator. The structure of Man Yee Building was symmetrical with a sense of solemnity. The side facing Queen's Road Central had an emphasis on volume, windows seemed to be hidden in the indents between vertical articulations, creating a deep shadow effect. The façade facing Des Voeux Road Central was in a comparatively modern style. Seemingly modular window design resembles modern curtain walls. The design of its facades was a simplified version of Art Deco, revealing the popular 1950s modern architectural style that values simplicity.
