Designed as a small residential community, North Point Estate provided self-contained kitchens, bathrooms, balconies, rooms and a centre for children and youth. Adjacent to a transportation hub, the estate with well-designed flat layouts enjoyed both serenity and convenience. Designed by the team of distinguished architects Eric Cumine, North Point Estate was completed in 1958 with an aim to create an open, spacious living space in every residential unit with excellent ventilation and daylighting. The estate was composed of seven blocks with eleven floors. Small shops and public spaces were located on the ground floor. The design of North Point Estate is obviously better than the one of Shek Kip Mei Estate, as public estates were no longer built merely as short term resettlement, but for the provision of quality living space that mainly targeted fairly well-off families. The advancement in the Government’s planning and consideration in public housing design is truly amazing.
小區模式規劃，獨立廚廁、海景、露台、間房、青少年活動中心，鄰近交通樞紐如巴士站和渡輪碼頭，旺中帶靜，間格整齊，還不是今天我們追求的理想家居？北角邨於1950年代未時被譽為亞洲最壯麗的工程。1954年由香港屋宇建設委員會策劃興建，1958年完成，由行内翹楚甘洺建築師樓負責設計，設計上力求戶戶開揚，單位的自然通風和採光效果極佳。整體規劃以7棟11層高的大樓組成，地面層配以小商鋪，社區中心，公共空間等設施。這個最初稱為渣華道廉租屋邨的早期公營房屋，設計明顯比1954年入伙的石硖尾邨大為進步。目標已非短期徒置，而是提供優質的生活空間，以小康家庭為主要對象。
