King Yin Lei

1937, Vernacular

45 Stubbs Road

History took a turn in 1930: The effort in pushing “Chinese Learning with Western Utilisation” ideology in Mainland China nurtured Chinese Eclectic architecture style, Chinese elites in Hong Kong shouldered the responsibility in connecting colonial government and the Chinese community. The prestigious Sum-Lee family built Hei Lo (also known as King Yin Lei) in eastern Mid-levels in 1937. The establishment ingeniously adopted Chinese Feng Shui disposition in the site’s north-facing landscape, to reflect Chinese imperial ritual forms with modern Western construction technologies, perfectly integrating Lingnan garden scenery with functional space of Western mansions. Admiring its spectacular architectural intellect brings one on set the TV series “Delightful Dream of the Capital” which was filmed here – one will be astonished by the contribution of Hong Kong in dovetailing Chinese culture and the world.
