Tung Wah Museum

1911, Institutional

Kwong Wah Hospital, 25 Waterloo Road

Concealed in Kwong Wah Hospital, Tung Wah Museum is a declared monument in Hong Kong less known to public. Originally the Main Hall Building of Kwong Wah Hospital, Tung Wah Museum was built in 1911 in traditional wooden structure supported by columns. The delicately constructed and crafted architecture demonstrates a combination of Chinese and Western architectural features. The museum comes in traditional ancestral hall setting but has also an air of western influence in its details. It houses a great collection of artifacts. Shennong was worshipped in the hall that houses golden plaques and couplets presented by the Qing Court in Late Qing Period to honor the contribution of Tung Wah Hospital. The site is now part of Tung Wah’s Records and Heritage Office, tasked to well preserve the valuable resources that record the social history of Chinese in Hong Kong.
